Understanding Kaffarah

The three options for expiation

The Quran prescribes Kaffarah in a specific order: (1) Free a slave — no longer applicable in our time. (2) Fast for 60 consecutive days — the days must be unbroken; if you miss a day without valid reason, you restart from zero. (3) Feed 60 poor people — if you genuinely cannot fast 60 consecutive days due to health or other valid reasons.

What counts as deliberately breaking a fast?

Kaffarah applies when you intentionally eat, drink, or have sexual intercourse during Ramadan fasting hours — knowing it's Ramadan, knowing you're fasting, and without any valid Islamic excuse. Accidentally eating (forgetting you're fasting) does NOT require Kaffarah — your fast remains valid.

Kaffarah for broken oaths

Breaking a sworn oath (yameen) carries a lighter Kaffarah: feed 10 poor people, or clothe them, or free a slave. If unable, fast for 3 consecutive days. The Quran states in 5:89: “Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame for [breaking] what you intended of oaths.”

Mosques collecting Kaffarah

If your mosque collects Kaffarah payments, it's important to track them separately from Zakat and general Sadaqah. PledgeNow gives every donation type its own tracking column, making accounting clean and auditable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kaffarah?

+

Kaffarah is a penalty (expiation) in Islam for deliberately breaking a religious obligation. The most common type is breaking a Ramadan fast intentionally — by eating, drinking, or having sexual intercourse during fasting hours without a valid excuse. Unlike Fidyah (which is compensation for inability to fast), Kaffarah is a penalty for wilful violation.

What's the difference between Kaffarah and Fidyah?

+

Fidyah is for those who cannot fast due to chronic illness or old age — it requires feeding one person per missed day. Kaffarah is for those who deliberately broke a valid fast — it requires fasting 60 consecutive days or feeding 60 poor people per broken fast. Kaffarah is much larger because it's a penalty, not a compensation.

When is Kaffarah required?

+

Kaffarah is required when you deliberately break a Ramadan fast without a valid Islamic excuse. If you broke your fast due to genuine illness, travel, menstruation, or other valid reasons, Kaffarah is not required — you simply make up the fast later (qada). Kaffarah applies only to intentional, inexcusable violations.

Can I fast instead of paying Kaffarah?

+

Yes. The options for Kaffarah for a broken fast are: (1) free a slave (no longer applicable), (2) fast 60 consecutive days — if you break the sequence, you must restart, or (3) if you genuinely cannot fast 60 days, feed 60 poor people. Most scholars say you should attempt fasting first if physically able.

How much is Kaffarah in the UK (2026)?

+

Using the Hanafi calculation (2 meals per person): 60 people × 2 meals × £5 per meal = £600 per broken fast. Using other schools (1 meal per person): 60 people × 1 meal × £5 = £300 per broken fast. These are minimums — you may give more.

Do I need separate Kaffarah for each broken fast?

+

Scholars differ on this. The Hanafi school generally requires one Kaffarah regardless of how many fasts were broken in the same Ramadan. Other schools may require separate Kaffarah for each deliberately broken fast. Consult your local scholar for guidance specific to your situation.
