Qurbani (Udhiyah) is the act of sacrificing an animal during Eid al-Adha (10th-12th Dhul Hijjah) to honour the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). It is obligatory (wajib) for every Muslim who possesses the Nisab threshold of wealth.
According to the Hanafi school, every sane adult Muslim who possesses wealth above the Nisab threshold must give Qurbani. Many scholars also recommend giving on behalf of family members. It is not obligatory for children or those below Nisab.
A sheep or goat counts as one Qurbani (one share). A cow, buffalo, or camel can be shared between up to 7 people, with each person paying for one share. Each share counts as one person's Qurbani.
UK charity prices for 2026 typically range from £45-80 per sheep share and £150-350 per cow share, depending on the country where the animal is sacrificed. Local UK Qurbani costs significantly more (£200+ for a sheep).
