Frequently Asked Questions

How long does registration take?

+

The Charity Commission typically processes applications within 30-45 days. Complex applications (e.g. unusual objects or overseas activities) can take longer.

Do I need a solicitor?

+

Not legally required, but strongly recommended for reviewing your governing document. Many community foundations offer free legal clinics for new charities.

What if our income is under £5,000?

+

You can operate as an unregistered charity. You won't appear on the register but can still claim Gift Aid. Registration becomes compulsory when income exceeds £5,000.
